NEW HORIZONS

The introduction of Gold Acrylic in the market inspired me to build up a collection of limited palette paintings and now I am experimenting with Black as a base and the colour laid on top...

Mazet de Vigneron

In this experiment entitled "Vineyard Hut" (Canvass is 96cms long x 30cms wide) the Acrylic colours are used straight out of the tube, no diluting except in rare cases. The canvasses are prepared with a gesso base and then I add Acrylic Moulding Paste (if required) to create contours and effects that are "pre-determined" by the type of scene that will be painted...This allows for greater texture and a roughness of canvass for the paint to slide over leaving the black under-painting exposed.

The design is in fact pre-sketched on paper and then transferred manually onto the black surface with a white watercolour pencil.

"Sunflowers in Provence" below is the same canvass size (96cms long x 30cms wide). Once again the black underpainting allows for a strikingly "rich in colour" effect. This style has been described as "Naïve" and "Bande Desinéé" (Cartoon); this is a true description of the affect that was being sought after.

Gold/Silver/Bronze Acrylic paint has been a wonderful introduction allowing for experiments in refracted light.  The position of the viewer will determine the look feel of the painting, as will the position of the painting in its hanging ocation (upper lighting, side lighting).  This creates a different feeling from the same painting depending on the time of day and the way the sunlight falls upon the work as well as where you stand.
